This book is a compilations of poems about food by different authors. The table of contents, cleverly labeled Today's Menu, is divided by different meals throughout the day, including breakfast, snack, lunch, dinner, and dessert. These poems create a sense of imagery by connecting to children's senses and experiences. These poems specifically target smell and taste, with some sense of touch as well. These poems incorporate a lot of rhythm and rhyme, making them enticing for children.
I chose this book because I love food, and most kids I know enjoy eating and playing with their food. With the book of poems, they can play with language to describe the foods they love eating. One poem talks about the smells of bacon, cinnamon buns, and coffee. Perhaps a student will have similar experiences of smelling foods and can create his/her version. Another poem explains the proper way to eat an Oreo cookie. I know many children who have different procedures for eating a cookie. Now, they can write a compilations of poems on how to eat a cookie.
Although each poem is written by a different author, Renée Flower illustrated all of them. She uses a lot of bold, fun colors to attract children. This book of poems is suitable for children of any age. The fact that they are about food allows all children to be able to relate.
